In India, Pakistan and some other parts of the Middle-East, a wedding is considered incomplete if the bride is not adorned with mehandi on her hands and feet. Mehandi is a natural herbal dye obtained from the henna plant which provides temporary color to the skin. Other than weddings, women apply mehandi on religious occasions and festivals as well.

First of all, one should start by selecting a mehandi artist; considering their previous work, mehandi designs and rates. Some artists charge on a per hour basis while others charge on a per hand basis. Either way, these artists are affordable and very creative. The next step involves selecting of mehandi designs. These designs are available for free on the internet. It is a good idea to even try out some designs to know what looks best on the bride.

During the application of the bridal mehandi, care should be taken to avoid smudging the design while it is still wet. After the mehandi dries, a solution of lemon juice and sugar should be applied with cotton. This solution functions as a fixer and enhances the absorption of the dye in the skin. Exposure to heat, either external or body heat, accelerates the oxidation reaction of henna and produces deeper color quickly.

After removing the mehandi using a butter knife or nails, wash hands with plain water. Applying eucalyptus oil, baby oil or any lotion removes excess mehandi as well as enhances the color.
